China says its trade with Africa reached a record $196.6 billion during the first half of 2026, driven by its zero-tariff policy for African countries. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian called it the strongest performance ever recorded for that stretch and predicted volumes would climb even higher by year’s end. According to him, roughly 75% of China’s exports to Africa consist of capital and intermediate goods that support industrialization and agricultural modernization rather than consumer demand alone. Furthermore, Lin dismissed criticism that China’s trade relationship with Africa is unbalanced, describing such claims as attempts to undermine bilateral cooperation. Despite global headwinds like rising protectionism, Lin said Beijing remains committed to expanding market access for African products, facilitating trade, and strengthening economic ties with the continent.
