Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has defended the presence of roughly 1,500 Russian mercenaries in his country, emphasizing their role in stabilizing a nation long threatened by armed groups. Speaking in a rare interview, he recalled how Russia and Rwanda were among the few to support CAR during a rebel offensive in 2020, with France and other European nations offering limited assistance. Touadéra expressed his goal to change perceptions about CAR and cooperate with the international community to develop the country. Earlier this month, he announced that he had secured over $9 billion in financing and investment announcements. However, observers describe the investments as highly speculative.
