Benin’s political landscape is set for a significant transformation following parliament’s approval of a major constitutional reform. The newly passed amendment extends the terms for the president and lawmakers from five to seven years, though the two-term limit remains intact. Passed by a 90–19 vote, the amendment also establishes a new legislative body, the Senate, composed of 25 to 30 members, including former presidents and individuals appointed by the head of state. This new chamber will possess the power to request a second review of legislation from the National Assembly. The reforms now await Constitutional Court approval and will take effect after April’s presidential election, at which President Patrice Talon is set to step down.
