Benin has inaugurated a new Senate, creating a second parliamentary chamber tasked with reviewing legislation, safeguarding constitutional principles, and overseeing issues affecting democracy, peace, and national unity. The Senate can request lawmakers to reconsider bills and must approve constitutional, electoral, and political party reforms before they take effect. It also has authority to suspend or revoke the political rights of public officials deemed to threaten national cohesion. Roughly 25 members were appointed rather than elected, prompting the opposition Democrats to call the institution undemocratic. Former President Boni Yayi, who initially boycotted the body before deciding to participate, could use the platform to revive the debate over imprisoned opposition figures. Meanwhile, questions persist over former President Patrice Talon’s expected Senate membership and the influence he may continue to wield after leaving office.
