Angola’s Opaia Group has launched the nation’s only operational vehicle assembly plant, marking a significant step toward reducing import dependence and building a local automotive industry. The new Luanda-based facility, operated by subsidiary Opaia Motors, can assemble up to 22,000 light vehicles and 1,000 buses annually. The plant utilizes a white-label model, importing vehicle kits from partners such as China’s Chery and Dongfeng Motor, as well as Volvo buses from Sweden, for final assembly and sale under its own brand. This initiative revives a sector dormant since a previous China-funded plant ceased production years ago. Beyond boosting local manufacturing, Opaia has announced plans to introduce electric vehicle production, signaling a long-term commitment to modernizing Angola’s industrial landscape.
