Album cover art has long been an integral part of African music, helping artists translate the themes, emotions, and cultural identity of their work into compelling visuals. Drawing on Fela Kuti’s iconic collaborations with designer Lemi Ghariokwu, experts argue that strong cover art emerges from close collaboration between musicians and creatives rather than aesthetics alone. However, the growing use of generative AI by African artists has sparked concerns that this creative dialogue is being replaced by quick, low-effort imagery. Designers and photographers from Nigeria and Ghana acknowledge AI’s usefulness as a supporting tool but insist it cannot replicate the human conversations, experimentation, and cultural understanding that shape memorable artwork. Many of these artists are also expanding into film, photography, exhibitions, and fashion, while urging musicians to develop cohesive visual identities that reflect the stories, emotions, and cultural contexts behind their music.
