The restoration of the United Nations’ historic Africa Hall in Addis Ababa has earned global recognition, winning the 2026 World Monuments Fund/Knoll Modernism Prize. Led by Australia-based firm Architectus, the decade-long project revived one of Africa’s most important modernist landmarks, returning it to active use as a hub for diplomacy and cultural exchange. Designed in 1961 by Italian architect Arturo Mezzedimi, Africa Hall played a central role in pan-African history, including hosting the founding of the Organization of African Unity. Judges praised the restoration for honoring the building’s original vision—from monumental stained glass to bespoke furniture—while adapting it for contemporary needs. Notably, this marks the first time an African site has received the prestigious award.
