The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has made history by becoming the first African race to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, placing it alongside storied events in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, Sydney, and New York. The announcement, confirmed after a rigorous assessment process, means Cape Town will officially debut as the eighth Major during its 2027 race. The milestone removes a longstanding barrier for African runners, who previously faced costly international travel to compete in a Major. The achievement reflects years of effort from race organizers, sponsors, and community supporters, bolstered by the #YouDoCount campaign. The 2026 edition’s profile was further elevated by legendary marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge, who chose Cape Town for his first race appearance on African soil.
