Fifty years after the Soweto Uprising, students in Harlem gathered to watch Sarafina! as part of the Soweto 50: We R the Future program. Organized by Harlem Stage and New Heritage Theatre Group, the event highlighted the enduring connection between South Africa’s freedom struggle and African American activism. During apartheid, Black American artists, activists, and cultural leaders helped keep global attention focused on South Africa’s fight for equality. The event featured a panel with Sarafina! star Leleti Khumalo and performers from Broadway’s The Lion King. Whoopi Goldberg, who appeared in the film, made a surprise visit to encourage students to stay civically engaged. Organizers emphasized that the teenagers who led the Soweto Uprising were close in age to today’s students, underscoring how youth activism can influence history. The commemoration celebrated a shared legacy of resistance, solidarity, and cultural exchange.
