Five documentaries centered on African narratives have been selected for Sheffield DocFest 2026, one of the world’s most influential documentary festivals. The Nigerian-focused political film “MKO” investigates the mysterious death of democracy icon Moshood Abiola following the annulment of his 1993 election victory. “Hope is a Word” documents poet-activist Nnimmo Bassey’s work training young writers in Nigeria’s oil-ravaged Niger Delta. “Crocodile” follows smartphone-wielding young filmmakers from Kaduna over 13 years, tracing creativity and friendship. “Notes from the Underground” maps South African hip-hop’s evolution from resistance to identity, while “Wax & Gold” examines Ethiopia’s complex history through the lens of Addis Ababa’s iconic Hilton Hotel. Together, the selections reflect growing international appetite for African storytelling across political, environmental, and cultural themes.
