Shea Radiance is a beauty brand that made its national debut in the U.S. at 300 Target stores on August 16th. The company’s goal is to create luxury beauty products from quality ingredients delivered in sustainable packaging while positively impacting lives. The brand’s key ingredient is fairly traded shea butter, which is combined with all-natural high quality ingredients in chic, award-winning, eco-friendly packaging. Shea Radiance partnered with the German non-governmental organization Partner for Future Worldwide (GTZ) via its AGRIWA (Agricultural Initiative for Women in Africa) program, a pre-financing and capacity building program in eight select communities in Nigeria. The partnership allows for larger scale production an increase in the quality of shea butter. The founders of Shea Radiance, Nigerian immigrants Shola and Funlayo Alabi, have pledged 10 percent of all profits from their company to its funding.
Shea Radiance has also partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and West Africa Trade Hub (WATH) to create international awareness of the benefits of West African shea butter as a natural and sustainable alternative to petroleum and mineral oils in cosmetics, since shea butter has been used for thousands of years and is a renowned beauty agent. Shea butter positively impacts not only its users, but also the farmers and producers, who in most communities are women. Women farmers can increase their income by becoming producers because producers make a significantly higher income from the sale of shea butter than the sale of unprocessed shea nuts. The growth of Shea Radiance will result in a higher volume of fair trade shea nut farming and production, and with that will come an increase in women’s income and the need for support services like transportation, packaging, warehousing and banking. Jobs are created for all and the positive economic impact spreads through the community.
Collective splendor? This is the beauty of shea and Shea Radiance believes there’s nothing more luxurious than that.
