UN Backs SAMIDRC Peace Efforts in Democratic Republic of Congo

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution to strengthen MONUSCO’s support for the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC). The resolution, proposed by Sierra Leone and France, will improve coordination, information sharing, and technical assistance between both missions. According to Michael Imran Kanu, Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the UN, the resolution is also targeted at fostering a conducive environment for ongoing regional peace efforts, including the recent ceasefire agreement between the DRC and Rwanda brokered by Angola. Nathalie Estival-Broadhurst, France’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized the mission’s readiness to provide technical support for civilian protection, logistical aid for medical evacuations, and information sharing. The “A3 plus one” coalition, comprising Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, and Guyana, also supports this initiative.
