Uganda does not have the reputation of neighboring Kenya and Tanzania when it comes to tourism. Nevertheless, the country offers one of the most premium tourism experiences on the African continent. For $800, visitors to the East African nation can go gorilla trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The experience, lasting one hour, is expensive. However, it is vital for sustainable tourism, with proceeds supporting conservation efforts. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to the largest mountain gorilla population in the world, with more than 500 roaming its woods. The trek takes place in small groups of eight people, with each group guided to visit one of 18 clusters of habituated animals by Uganda Wildlife Authority experts. The money earned from the trek allows Ugandan authorities to protect the gorillas from poaching and habitat loss. Luxury eco-lodges like Kibale Lodge, operated by Volcanoes Safaris, add to the premium adventure.
