Sudan’s Conflict Responsible for Increased Rebel Activity in the Central African Republic

UN experts have reported an increase in rebel activity in the Central African Republic (CAR) due to the spillover from the ongoing civil war in neighboring Sudan. According to the report, the Sudanese military have carried out air raids around border territories while its rival, the Rapid Support Forces, crosses over into the CAR to recruit soldiers from the armed gangs there. Sudan’s civil war has also disrupted trade routes into the country and complicated aid delivery there. CAR is one of the poorest countries in the world, largely because rebel groups have ran rampart over the country in the past decade. The country is blessed with vast amounts of mineral resources. Unfortunately, it has been unable to leverage this wealth toward its development as the rebel groups regularly disrupt the mining activities of the foreign companies which operate in the country.
