The Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa has expanded to include Rise Mzansi and Al Jama-ah, bringing the total number of participating parties to 10 out of the 18 in the National Assembly. Rise Mzansi’s inclusion follows internal party discussions to determine whether the government was prioritizing its key manifesto issues. In a statement, the party’s chief organizer, Makashule Gana, emphasized their commitment to serving the public and holding the executive accountable, stating the party didn’t join the GNU because of cabinet positions. With this development, the GNU now comprises the ANC, DA, IFP, PA, Good, PAC, FF+, UDM, Rise Mzansi, and Al Jama-ah. The ANC noted the first phase of GNU expansion is complete, representing over 70% of the 2024 vote. While the expansion is a good thing, it will also present some new headaches to the coalition with more parties now jostling for limited Cabinet positions.
