South Africa’s Democratic Alliance Suspends MP for Racist Comments

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has suspended MP Renaldo Gouws following the authentication of a video showing him making racist comments. Gouws had initially denied the video, implying it was doctored. However, the party released a statement on Thursday confirming it is genuine. Consequently, the DA suspended Gouws, a former Nelson Mandela Bay councillor, and stated that he will face disciplinary charges before its federal legal commission. The video, dating back to 2009, features Gouws making racist remarks about then-president Jacob Zuma and then-ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema. In the video, he had asked what would have happened if a white person had sang songs calling for the killing of people of other races like Zuma and Malema had done before going ahead to say, “Kill the f**ing k**irs, kill all the f**ing n*ggers.” Gouws has since expressed regret for his tone in the video. However, he denies he was racist.
