Rwanda Government Addresses Plans to Suspend UK Deportation Deal

The Rwandan government has acknowledged the UK’s decision to halt its controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda in a new statement released late Monday. This marks the first official response from Rwandan authorities to the new Labour government’s intention to cancel the program. During his first press conference, the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the deportation plan “dead and buried,” criticizing it as a “gimmick.” The scheme, intended to deter migrants from dangerous journeys to the UK, has faced widespread criticism from human rights groups who argue it is cruel and inhumane. It has already cost the British government hundreds of millions of dollars, even though no deportation has taken place yet. Rwanda’s statement affirmed its adherence to the agreement, including financial commitments.
