Chidimma Adetshina, the former Miss South Africa contestant who was recently the subject of a nationality row, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday. Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father, the 23-year-old withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition due to backlash and xenophobic attacks inspired by her nationality. The controversy intensified when the South African government stated it was investigating her mother for allegedly stealing the identity of a South African woman. Following the controversy and her subsequent withdrawal, Nigerian organizers invited Adetshina to join their competition. After winning the title in Lagos, she expressed pride in her journey and gratitude for the support she received. She also stated that she loves South Africa despite the controversy. Adetshina will now represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in November, with high hopes for victory.
