Explorer finally finds Angola’s legendary ‘ghost elephants’

Elephant with glowing eyes in Angola’s wilderness at night.

For decades, rumors of “ghost elephants” roaming the remote highlands of Angola lingered as legend among local communities. Determined to uncover the truth, South African explorer Steve Boyes spent seven years searching the vast wilderness using camera traps, sensors, and aerial surveys—yet the elusive herd remained out of sight. Everything changed in 2024 when Boyes and a team of expert KhoiSan trackers finally encountered these elephants deep in the isolated wetlands known as Lisima lya Mwono. His discovery is the subject of a new Werner Herzog documentary, revealing massive bulls standing 12 feet tall—potentially the largest land mammals alive. DNA testing has since confirmed these giants are genetically distinct from any other population in Africa, having lived in isolation for a long time. Now, this discovery is fueling a massive conservation movement, transforming this mystical “Source of Life” into one of the planet’s largest protected landscapes.
