European Union Sanctions Six People Over Sudan Civil War

The European Union has imposed sanctions on six individuals involved in the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Among those targeted are an RSF general in West Darfur accused of committing atrocities, including ethnic killings and sexual violence, and the RSF’s financial adviser. A Mahamid clan leader linked to the RSF in West Darfur was also sanctioned. On the Sudanese army side, the sanctions target the director of Defense Industry Systems and the Sudanese Air Force commander for their roles in indiscriminate bombings of residential areas. Finally, the bloc imposed sanctions on former Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti Mohamed for his part in the war. With the sanctions, the individuals’ assets will be frozen and travel bans imposed such that they can no longer travel across the EU’s 27 member states.
