President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is in discussions with the South African government to launch in the country. Musk was born in South Africa. However, Starlink is not yet available in his birth country, despite being operational in neighboring countries such as Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe. Ramaphosa expressed his desire for Musk to invest in South Africa, saying they will continue discussions. While Starlink hasn’t commented on Ramaphosa’s statement, Elon Musk stated on X, another of his companies, that Starlink awaits regulatory approval to operate in South Africa. Despite Ramaphosa’s words, South African laws, which require companies to meet specific Black ownership quotas to address past apartheid inequalities, could pose a hurdle to Musk’s investment in the country.
