History
Prior to the civil war that broke out in 1991, the country was beautiful and, more important, safe. The side effects of that war have left many areas essentially in ruins. In particular, the southern part of the country still experiences a concentrated amount of civil unrest.
Southern Somalia has become a safe haven for thugs, criminals, pirates, and terrorists. Meanwhile, the northern region of Somalia, also known as Somaliland, is its complete opposite. Somaliland enjoys peace, stability, and fast-paced development, as well as a booming economy.
Somaliland’s safe and fair elections have set a precedent for not only the rest of the country but also most of Africa.
The Top 4: Local Advice
1. Be sure to pay very close attention to local customs and rules. If you’re able to travel with a well-versed guide or handler, we’d suggest that you do so.
2. Dress appropriately, conservatively, and light, as the country can get extremely hot.
3. If there are curfews where you are staying, adhere to them and stay clear of areas where tourists are discouraged.
4. Be safe, but allow yourself to have fun.
