Yesterday at the Olympics, the South African men’s 4 x 400m relay team did not finish their qualifying heat, as Kenyan, Vincent Mumo, collided with South African runner, Ofentse Mogawane, causing him to fall over. The judges disqualified the Kenyan team, and South Africa won their appeal to advance to the final. Later today, the South African men’s 4 x 400m relay team will compete in the final.
As expected, David Rudisha won gold in the men’s 800m race yesterday. He set the new world record in a time of 1:40:91. Silver went to Nijel Amos of Botswana who set his nation’s record in a time of 1:41:73, and Kenyan runner, Timothy Kitum, won bronze with a personal best time of 1:42:53. The Nigerian women’s 4 x 100m team did not repeat their success from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. However, the team did finish the race in a season’s best time. And, Bridgette Hartley of South Africa won the bronze medal in the Women’s Kayak Single (K1) 500m event.
Today, the Nigerian Women’s 4 x 400m relay team will compete in the qualifying heats, hopefully advancing to the finals, and the South African Men’s team will compete in the final of the 4 x 400m race. Also, look out for the women’s 5000m and 1500m races. And, on Saturday, Caster Semenya of South Africa will compete in the 800m final, having qualified with the fastest time in the semifinals in a time of 1:57.67. Another event to watch is the men’s 5000m final.
