2011 is the International Year of People of African Descent.
The announcement came quietly, but it’s a significant one: the U.S. State Department and the United Nations announced that 2011 would be declared the International Year of People of African Descent. Designed to represent and honor both current residents of the continent and the African diaspora, the UN and the State Department have pledged to “promote inclusion and participation of people of African descent” through social and political policy and to create awareness of African culture and heritage around the world.
