I was born in the States where I have lived my whole life, save the three years from age 12 to 15 I attended Mfantsiman Girls' Secondary School in Ghana, West Africa. Those three years were the inspiration for my debut novel

In August 2006, my girlfriend and I went on a road trip to Nouadhibou, Mauritania's main port located 210 miles north of Nouakchott, the country's capital. At the time, I was working on an electoral assistance program to help local stakeholders organize free and competitive elections. The program was quite intense; I was therefore looking forward to a weekend getaway.
