Getting In and Around
Visas: Entering Morocco is a simple procedure: you need to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months past the date of your departure from Morocco; no visa is required for a visit shorter than 90 days. If you plan on staying longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a visa extension and provide a legitimate reason.
Transportation: Travelling around Marrakech is very easy. Traveling by foot, taxi, bus, or private car are easy, reliable, and inexpensive modes of transportation.
Safety and Security
The U.S. Department of State’s consular website has a great deal of information about safety and security in Morocco. It can’t be repeated often enough: be sensible when you travel. Be alert and aware about your surroundings.
The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has created a security ratings system called the Ibrahim Index, wherein scores are based on each country’s quality of government. Before traveling to Morocco or anywhere on the continent, check the index and do your research.
The Top 3: Local Advice
1. Budget wisely. Although Marrakech is a fairly inexpensive city, there’s so much to do that you want to make sure you experience everything and at a good price.
2. Get loose! Allow yourself to fully enjoy all that the city has to offer, leave any western preconceptions behind, and consider yourself a regular or even a native of the city. The city dwellers are friendly and welcoming.
3. When at the souks (markets) or walking around at night, stay conscious of your surroundings while enjoying yourself. Crime is quite low but petty thefts can happen.
