An Oasis of PlentyRather than the land of milk and honey, Siwa, an oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert, can unabashedly be called the land of dates and olives. Perhaps most known for its rich past as the seat of the famed oracle that advised Alexander the Great more than two millennia ago, Siwa is now visited not only for its historical relevance, but also for its visually stunning landscape (endless white sand dunes surround), burgeoning environmentally friendly hotel scene, and local, traditional crafts, which, for the last decade, have started to be revived by Siwa Creations.

Decorated Walls in TiébéléIt’s latFebruary, the middle of the dry season. It’s not the time when the Kassena women of Tiébélé usually decorate their houses, but the community center opens in a week, and community pride dictates that it be elaborately decorated with traditional designs. Tiébélé is a moderately sized village in southern Burkina Faso, a poor, land-locked country north of Ghana.

A Cultural IdentityDecorated adobe houses used to be common in northern Ghana. Today they can be seen primarily around the village of Sirigu, about fifteen miles from Bolgatanga. The women use colored mud and minerals to decorate their houses with intricate geometric and animal designs painted in black, white and rust red.

Design For DevelopmentIn 2009, German designer Alexandra Joy Jaeckel used her design talents and expertise to design a beautiful line of hand-crafted baskets and gourds. She collaborated with WomenCraft, a fair trade social enterprise which partners with artisans throughout Western Tanzania. Her volunteer trip to Africa enabled her to work directly with the artisans, expanding their product line by designing a traditional, yet modern collection.

Tunisian Wood and MetalworkThe blue color of the forged metal grills, omnipresent in a traditional Tunisian house, is what immediately catches  one's eye. Made to fit windows or serve as garden gates or awning support, cast and forged iron grills provide lining for windows and air vents for kitchens and bathrooms. Their designs contrast with the whitewashed façades of houses. They preserve the intimacy of the people, yet their artisanry embellishes homes with their peculiar beauty.
