Museums in Kenya
The largest museums in Kenya are the National Museum in Nairobi, which aims to interpret the heritage of Kenya, and the Fort Jesus Museum in Mombasa, which consists of finds from archaeological excavations at Fort Jesus, Gede, Manda, Ungwana and other sites. Nairobi Snake Park is a popular destination with numerous varieties of reptile on exhibit. The Nairobi Gallery, located in Nairobi City, holds temporary exhibitions that continuously and dynamically rotate.
Karen Blixen Museum was once the centerpiece of a farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills. The museum gained international fame with the release of “Out of Africa,” an Oscar winning film based on Karen’s autobiography by the same title. Lamu Museums are located in the Lamu Archipelago on the North Coast, one of the most beatiful & serene locations on the African continent and a World Heritage Site.
There are numerous local museums, including the Kiriandusi Prehistoric Site in Gilgil, founded in 1928, the Gedi Ruins Museum south of Malindi and museums in Kabarnet, Lamu, Meru, Narak, and Olergesailie. The Kapenguria Museum, opened in 1993, details Kenya's political development and struggle for independence.
