Who is Nelson Mandela?

Answer: Nelson Mandela, born July 18th, 1918 was President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black president and the first president to be elected by a fully representative democratic election. Mandela was an outspoken opponent of apartheid and was heavily involved anti-apartheid activism. He was arrested and convicted by the South African courts for various crimes that he committed while leading the anti-apartheid movement, including sabotage. Mandela was in prison for 27 years, the majority of which he spent on Robben Island, a prison off the coast of Cape Town. During his imprisonment Mandela completed a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London via correspondence. He was released on February 11th, 1990 when President F. W. de Klerk reversed the ban on the African National Congress and other anti-apartheid organizations. After his release Mandela was instrumental in the negotiations and reconciliation that led to a multi-racial democracy in South Africa. For his lifetime of speaking out against the injustices of apartheid and commitment to human freedom, Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. After his Presidency, Mandela became an advocate for a number of human rights organizations such as the Make Poverty History movement. He has also devoted a great deal of energy to the fight against AIDS. Mandela currently serves as a member of The Elders, a group of world leaders that convenes to offer their opinions and wisdom on some of the world's toughest problems.
