| Question: | What customs and traditions in Africa are common? Should I pay attention to them? |
| Answer: | Customs vary from country to country and your best bet is to consult a country-specific travel guide for accurate information. One custom that is generally common in Africa is the importance of greetings. Many African societies are very formal and a polite greeting usually involves inquiries about health and family members. While you should not necessarily go up to strangers and ask them about their family, we suggest that you take a couple of minutes to learn how to great people in the national language of the country you will visit. By simply making the effort to learn and use a couple of phrases like 'hello', 'how are you', and 'thank you' in the country's national language, you are demonstrating respect for local culture. The locals with whom you interact will be surprised and pleased by your efforts. Another custom that applies across the whole continent (other than modest dress) is that you should always ask permission before taking a photo of a local. You should also ask permission before taking a picture of a religious institution such as a church or a mosque and other public buildings. Be forewarned that you should not under any circumstances take pictures of border crossings posts. |
