Question:

Do I need travel insurance for Africa?

Answer: Travelers to Africa should definitely consider purchasing a travel insurance policy. Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive and you can buy a plan tailored to the length of your travels. Most travel insurance plans cover things like cancellations due to weather, sudden illness or death, lost luggage, and terrorism insurance that reimburses your expenses in the event that the U.S. Department of State issues a travel warning advising not to travel within a given country for a period of time. When you are traveling to Africa (especially underdeveloped or rural areas) it's very important that you purchase an insurance plan that will reimburse you for medical emergencies. These policies will offer reimbursement for the cost of doctors visits, medication, and most importantly medical evacuation out of the country in the event that adequate medical care in not available nearby and the situation is urgent.
