FAQ Number: 56
Question:

Can I use traveler's checks in Africa?

Answer: Traveler's checks are not recommended for use in Africa unless you will be in a capital city in a well-developed country (such as South Africa). The checks, when and if they are accepted at all may take hours to exchange. You might also receive a weaker exchange rate than if you were exchanging hard currency and Traveler's checks can be subject to very high fees (in some cases up to half the value of the check).
