Wrap-Up: Art for Africa Auction at Sotheby′s in New York

Africa Foundation notched another successful mark in its belt at the conclusion of its successful auction collaboration with Art for Africa at Sotheby’s in New York on Thursday, November 17th.

The donated art represented artists not just from Africa, but from around the world. An Andy Warhol portrait of Muhammed Ali hung among pieces by musician Nick Cave, Beezy Bailey, a South African artist who became involved in the creation of Art for Africa, and Mary Sibande, also of South Africa, who created possibly the most arresting piece in the auction—a sculpture of a woman in a bright blue maid’s outfit, reaching towards the sky. Titled “I decline. I refuse to recline.“, the piece sold for $30,000.

The entire auction raised over $300,000 for Art for Africa and the Africa Foundation. Guests at the event included Dave Matthews of the Dave Matthews Band and Mr. Bailey, and guests were treated to a performance by Brown Rice Family before the auction began.
