In honor of the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on 19 January 2013, our very first “Video of the Week” post goes to:
Sela Sela – The Official Afcon Song
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has chosen “Sela Sela” (Dance Together) as the official song of the Afcon competition that takes place in South Africa from 19 January – 10 February.
The song is a collaboration between American singer Zahra Universe and Cameroonian Wes Madiko, who both co-wrote the song. It has a catchy tune, with a universal beat featuring including a mix of genres from traditional Africa to electro-house and dance. It also features eaturing lyrics in both Bantu and English language.
Before you start wondering why yet another non-African (ala Shakira with the 2010 World Cup song “Waka Waka”) has been featured in the official song of an event hosted in Africa, you might be interested to know that Zahra has close ties with Cameroon. She was named a “princess” in Bana and Bafut – both villages in the west Central African country, as well as ”Ambassador of Goodwill” for the city of Kribi.
“It is our goal to make the official song of the Africa Football Cup of Nations be heard around the world to share in the challenges, triumphs, and spirit of community that comes with the sport of football, and especially in this, the largest tournament of football on the African continent.”
