The 2012 Olympics: Day 11 and Day 12 Update

Yesterday, August 6, Ethiopian athlete Sofia Assefa won the bronze medal in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase. She finished behind Habiba Ghribi of Tunisia who finished second in the final race in a national record time of 9:08:37. These two athletes joined Karan Mohamed Gaber Ebrahim (below) of Egypt, who won silver in the men’s 84kg Greco-Roman weightlifting competition, in being the only medal winners from the continent in yesterday’s games.

There were many African athletes who qualified to continue competing in various track and field events. A total of eight African athletes qualified for the men’s 800m semifinals. pia and Hellen Onsando Obiri of Kenya qualified for the semifinals. Maurielle Ahoure of Cote d’Ivoire was the only African athlete to qualify in the women’s 200m final, and Muizat Ajoke Odumosu of Nigeria will compete for a medal in the of the women’s 400m hurdles on Wednesday.

Today at the Olympics the event to watch out for is the men’s 1500m final. There are many African medal hopefuls, including Asbel Kiprop and Silas Kiplagat, who qualified for the finals in the two fastest times.
