Nigerian officials announced Friday that Kamene Okonjo was released by kidnappers after a five-day captivity. She is the mother of Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Okonjo had been abducted from her home last Sunday. She was reported to be in good health by representatives from the finance ministry.
Kidnappings in West Africa, Beyond Okonjo
The New York Times reports that kidnappings in West Africa have become much more prevalent and lucrative. In particular, Islamist militants have been able to raise millions of dollars in ransoms from kidnappings. While Nigeria is a common hub for kidnappings, the vast majority of kidnappings in West Africa are currently taking place in Mali, where militants are active in the north of the country.
