Gemini Health Care Group recently hosted its 5th Annual Fundraising Gala at the Sheraton National Hotel. On this night a number of physicians along with their families and friends came together to raise money for building a healthy future for Ethiopian children. The funds will go to the group’s founder Dr. Ebba K. Ebba’s clinic in Ethiopia that focuses on providing pediatric services and training in Ethiopia.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Irwin Redlener, spoke about how serendipity led him to fly to Ethiopia and provide his expertise during the 1984 famine. He also reminded the audience that though much progress has been made they musn’t stop now for “children are the promise of possibility.” Dr. Redlener along with Mr. Melakow Guirbo, the late Professor Bekele Afesa, and the late Professor Taye Mekuria were honored with community service awards.
Dr. Ebba closed the dinner with a few simple phrases, two of which were “if you have no will to change it, you have no right to criticize it” and “Gemini doesn’t try to do it perfect, [they] try to do it right.” He thanked the group for their continued support. With the funds raised, he and his team have taken seven medical missions to Ethiopia since 2009, have hired new teachers, built a playroom, and provided numerous parents with vocational training while their children received care.
