Introducing the University of the People (UoPeople), the world’s first tuition- free online university. Grounded in the belief that knowledge is a key ingredient of world peace, UoPeople provides universal access to collegiate-level studies, despite geographic and financial constraints of its students. Studies commenced in September 2009, and so far 600 students from nearly 100 countries have been accepted.
UoPeople utilizes the worldwide presence of the Internet to bring university-level studies to within the reach of millions of people across the world, including those in Africa. UoPeople has attracted top academics from leading universities, including Provost, Dr. David H. Cohen, Columbia University; Dean of Business Administration, Dr. Russell Winer, New York University; Dean of Computer Science, Dr. Alexander Tuzhilin, New York University; and Dean of General Studies, Dr. Geraldine Downey, Columbia University.
In addition, an impressive group of librarians has volunteered to help the university and its students. Headed by the Director of Library Services, Ms. Ilene Frank, University of South Florida, the Library Services Advisory Committee includes: Ms. Carol Goodson, University of West Georgia; Mr. Tom Peters, TAP Information Services; Mr. Jim Neal, Columbia University; Ms. Elizabeth F. Watson, University of the West Indies, and Mr. Blair Kauffman, Yale University.
