What better place to host an international hip hop buffet than New York City?
The official CMJ showcase, PLANET HIP HOP, is just that: proof that the ever- expanding global hip hop network can still taste its roots and continues to salivate for multi-cultural exchange.
Many of this year’s emcees are members of the global diaspora. Not only do they proudly represent the sonic and social influences of their homes, they’re able to perform their stories together and create a powerful cultural voice in hip hop’s homeland. Back in Dar es Salaam or the Dominica

n Republic, these artists are already household names. PLANET HIP HOP is a snapshot of the current international urban music radar. The geographical and artistic reach of hip hop culture becomes overwhelmingly obvious – from The ReMINDers, a duo that hails from Belgium, Congo, and the U.S.A, that have a sweet Fugees flow, to Krussia, a Russian emcee who spits with a jovial, old school style. The rise of Arab hip hop is represented by Syrian-American rapper Omar Offendum, who’s releases have been awarded wide critical acclaim. The emcee’s sociopolitically motivated #Jan25 collaborative track got over 200,000 hits on YouTube and received international attention, shedding light on the resilience of the Egyptian people during their most recent uprising.

PLANET HIP HOP is CMJ Music Marathon’s only international urban music showcase. Sitting perfectly amidst a melting pot of NYC identity and culture, Nomadic Wax, World Hip Hop Market, and The Bloom Effect presents an event where hip hop is identity. This is a show where beats break geographical borders and languages don’t impede comprehension. We all speak hip hop on this planet.
The event is Saturday, October 22 at 92YTribeca on 200 Hudson Street in New York City. Join us from 8 pm until 1 am! Connect with us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=249914761718124.
