A Sweet Treat: Cupcake Fundraiser for the Visao Foundation and Telem Center

What can you say about a fundraising event that takes place in midtown New York City at Sprinkles Cupcakes? Only one thing comes to mind:

Sweet!

On July 19, I had the privilege of attending “Cupcakes & Charity”, hosted by the Visão Foundation in partnership with Telem Center for the African Child. While snacking on cupcakes that were almost too beautiful to eat (the salted caramel cupcake may have changed my life), I and all of the attendees had the opportunity to learn more about these two great organizations.

The Telem Center is a nonprofit providing underserved children of African descent an opportunity to celebrate their cultural heritage and invoke a sense of pride in their ancestry.

On display at the event were pictures of children at camp having a blast with various cultural, educational and recreational camping activities. What really impressed me was how the camp inculcates a sense of cultural pride in African children while showing them a great time – a perfect combination.

The other co-host of the event, the Visão Foundation, is a nonprofit organization that is focused on providing quality educational opportunities for disadvantaged children in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The Foundation’s goal is to ensure that all children in Sierra Leone receive a quality education, and an opportunity to rise above their circumstances and achieve for themselves and their communities a more decent existence.

I love attending fundraisers on behalf of Africa.com because it gives me an opportunity to meet the people behind these organizations. As I mingled and met with Telem Center and Visão Foundation volunteers, Board members, and supporters, I was inspired by their “all-hands-on-deck” commitment to the future of children here and in Sierra Leone.

I highly recommend that you not click this link on an empty stomach, but here are some photos from the event. Stay tuned to Africa.com for information about Visão’s next event, a fundraising African cooking class in September.
